Best Tax Software in 2026: 18 Tools Compared by Company Size and Requirements

Updated November 2, 2026 · 18 tools · Facts checked against vendor pages · How we review

The best tax software depends on who prepares the return. US freelancers with Schedule C income can start with FreeTaxUSA, which charges $0 for the federal return, and German Selbstständige can look at WISO Steuer, which covers the EÜR, Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer in one license. German Steuerkanzleien that keep DATEV and want a client portal can look at KanzleiDrive or TaxDome.

This page is for self-employed people and small business owners who file their own returns in the US or Germany, and for German tax firms (Steuerkanzleien) choosing software to work with their clients. The tools fall into three groups: US filing software, German filing software and German software for tax firms. Within each group they are ordered by what they file or cover. Copy the requirement lists into a request on SaaSBid, say which group you belong to, and let vendors respond with offers.

What is tax software?

Tax software walks a taxpayer through a return with guided questions, calculates the result and sends it electronically to the tax authority. In the US that means IRS and state returns, in Germany it means filings to the Finanzamt, usually through ELSTER. A freelancer enters income and expenses, reviews the result and submits. A second kind serves the advisors: German Steuerkanzleien use practice software with a client portal, document exchange, deadlines and a link to DATEV to work with their Mandanten. Those tools run the firm and do not file a return for a private taxpayer.

Core capabilities

  • Guided return interview

Asks plain-language questions, fills the right forms behind the scenes and calculates the amount owed or refunded.

  • Self-employed and entity returns

Handles Schedule C and Schedule SE or the EÜR and Anlage S, and in some products partnership, S corp or C corp returns in the US or Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer returns in Germany.

  • Electronic filing

Submits the return directly to the IRS and states, or to the German tax office, so nothing has to be printed.

  • Data import and expert review

Brings in last year's return, tax documents or accounting data, and some products add a CPA, enrolled agent or Steuerberater who reviews the return, usually as a paid upgrade.

  • Client portal and document exchange

For tax firms: clients upload receipts and exchange files with the Kanzlei in a protected area, often with reminders and digital sign-off (Freizeichnung).

  • Deadlines, tasks and DATEV link

For tax firms: recurring tasks and deadlines per client, plus an interface that passes master data, receipts and bookings to DATEV.

How to choose tax software

Tax market

Each product files for one country, either US federal and state returns or German returns, so this criterion comes before any feature comparison. The German firm tools serve Steuerkanzleien rather than taxpayers. Strong tools state their market clearly and list which tax types or user groups they cover.

Self-employed return support

This is about whether the self-employed forms are part of the product you buy: Schedule C and Schedule SE in the US, or the EÜR with Anlage S and G in Germany. Strong tools include them in the tier you are quoted, while weaker offers keep them in a higher edition or exclude them from the free tier.

Business entity returns

Small business owners need to know whether the product files only the personal return or also entity returns. In the US that means 1120-S, 1065 or 1120, in Germany Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer filings. Strong tools list each return type by name, and several products here file none of them.

E-filing to IRS or ELSTER

A return only counts once it reaches the tax authority, so direct electronic filing is the outcome that matters. Look for IRS and state e-file in the US and transmission to the Finanzamt or through ELSTER in Germany, and check whether state or per-return fees apply.

Data import

Importing last year's return, tax documents or accounting data saves hours and prevents typing errors. Strong tools carry prior-year data forward and read documents or connected accounting software, while weaker ones start from a blank form every year.

Expert or Steuerberater help

Expert help ranges from help articles and chat to a CPA, enrolled agent or Steuerberater who reviews or prepares the return. The best fit depends on how complex your case is, and some products offer no human expert at all. The firm tools are software for the Steuerberater, so what to compare there is onboarding and support.

Tax firm workflows

This criterion applies to software for German tax firms. It covers a client portal for documents and approvals, Freizeichnung, deadlines and tasks, a DATEV interface and, at some vendors, time tracking and fee billing. Strong tools state which of these are in the plan you are quoted, and several vendors here say that billing, Fristen or DATEV connections are missing or cost extra.

Pricing model

Tax software charges per return, per state, per tax year or through a monthly subscription, and some tiers are free. Compare the total for your actual case, including state fees, expert add-ons and extra returns, rather than the headline starting price.

Target company size

Some tools are meant only for freelancers and sole proprietors, while others also handle LLCs, partnerships or S corps in the US, or Gewerbetreibende in Germany. The firm tools range from small Steuerkanzleien to offices with hundreds of clients. Strong tools state who they are built for and where they stop, for example without GmbH or UG support.

Tax Software FAQ

What is tax software?

Tax software guides you through a tax return with questions, calculates the result and files it electronically with the tax authority. In the US it prepares IRS and state returns. In Germany it prepares the Einkommensteuer and, for self-employed people, often the EÜR, Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer returns. A separate group is software for tax firms, which handles client portals, deadlines and DATEV links.

What is the best tax software for self-employed people?

It depends on the country. In the US, FreeTaxUSA files Schedule C and Schedule SE with a $0 federal return, and TurboTax Premium suits filers who want optional expert help. In Germany, WISO Steuer, smartsteuer and SteuerSparErklärung list EÜR, Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer returns for Selbstständige.

Is there free tax software for freelancers?

Yes, in some cases. FreeTaxUSA charges $0 for the federal return including Schedule C, and Cash App Taxes offers free federal and state filing. In Germany, ELSTER is the free official portal, and WISO Steuer offers a free test version with payment only at submission.

What software do German tax firms use?

DATEV is described by the vendor as the standard platform for Steuerberater, and membership is required. Agenda and ADDISON are complete systems sold as alternatives to DATEV. Portal and practice tools such as KanzleiDrive and TaxDome work next to a main system.

Does a tax firm need software next to DATEV?

Not always. Portal tools such as KanzleiDrive work next to the main system and focus on document exchange with clients. Check whether the DATEV interface is included: at KanzleiDrive it starts with the Office plan.

What should I include in a request for tax software?

State whether you file for yourself or run a tax firm. Filers name the country, entity type, forms, number of returns and whether they want expert review. Firms add client and user counts, whether DATEV stays, and the portal features they need. Add your deadline and a budget range in words.

Ratings follow each product's stated audience, whether it files business entity returns, and plan limits such as returns per license. For the firm tools they follow the stated firm size, included users or client bands, and whether the vendor names larger offices. Enterprise is mostly empty because few vendors say anything about it.

  • 1-10 people

This is the core audience for the filing tools, and the first decision is the market. In the US, FreeTaxUSA and Cash App Taxes both file Schedule C income at $0 federal, while TurboTax adds expert help. In Germany, WISO Steuer, smartsteuer and SteuerSparErklärung list EÜR and Gewerbesteuer returns, and Accountable suits solo Freiberufler. A small Steuerkanzlei can start with KanzleiDrive Single (up to 50 clients) or DATEV's Startpaket compact.

  • 11-50 people

Few filing tools address a business with its own entity returns. In the US, TaxAct lists online 1065, 1120-S and 1120 products, and TurboTax covers 1120-S and 1065 through experts. For a German tax firm of this size, KanzleiDrive Office (€349), Agenda and TaxDome are the listed options, while none of the German filing tools lists Körperschaftsteuer returns.

  • 51-500 people

The filing tools are built for individuals and small entities, so none of them is rated for this size. Among the firm tools, DATEV names Steuerberater, Wirtschaftsprüfer and Rechtsanwälte of all sizes, Agenda covers offices up to mid-size with price tiers up to 250 Mandanten. Ask each vendor about user counts and interfaces.

  • 500+ people

Do-it-yourself filing products are not aimed at this size. Among the firm tools, DATEV names firms of all sizes, and KanzleiDrive offers an individual Enterprise price above 500 clients. Describe the entities, users and interfaces in your request and let vendors say whether they can serve you.

Tax Software requirements checklist

Use this list to write down what your team actually needs. Sorting requirements into must-have, should-have and nice-to-have is what lets vendors quote accurately instead of pitching their biggest plan.

Must have

  • Filing for the right country: IRS and state returns, or German returns via ELSTERProducts serve one market, so a US tool cannot file in Germany and the reverse.
  • Schedule C and Schedule SE, or Anlage S, G and EÜR, included in the quoted priceSelf-employed forms are often reserved for higher tiers or separate editions.
  • Direct electronic filing with the tax authorityIt decides whether the return can be submitted without paper or a separate portal.
  • A written list of every form and entity type the product filesPartnership, S corp, Gewerbesteuer or Umsatzsteuer returns are missing from many products.
  • Total price shown before submission, including state or per-return feesAdd-ons and state fees often change the final bill.
  • For tax firms: a Mandantenportal with document exchange and a DATEV interfaceClients need a secure way to hand over receipts, and the DATEV connection is a paid add-on or a higher plan at some vendors.

Should have

  • Import of last year's return and tax documentsCarrying figures over saves time and reduces typing errors.
  • Live access to a CPA, enrolled agent or Steuerberater when a question comes upComplex self-employed cases are where a human review matters most.
  • A pre-submission check that flags inconsistenciesCatching errors before filing avoids notices from the tax authority.
  • A version that runs on your operating system (Windows, Mac or browser)Some desktop programs support only one platform.
  • For tax firms: deadlines and tasks per client with automatic remindersRecurring work such as bookkeeping and annual accounts is easier to track when each client has its own task list.

Nice to have

  • Import from accounting or bookkeeping softwareIncome and expense totals can arrive without retyping.
  • A mobile app for photos of receipts and documentsIt makes collecting paperwork during the year easier.
  • Support for several returns under one license or feePartners, family members or a second business can share the cost.
  • For tax firms: time tracking and fee invoicing in the same toolNot every client portal covers billing or time tracking, so the firm may need a second tool.

Questions vendors ask before quoting

Have answers ready for these, and your first conversation with a vendor starts at pricing instead of discovery.

  1. Which country will the return be filed in, and are you also filing in a second one?Tax software serves one market, so a two-country setup usually needs two products.
  2. Are you a sole proprietor, freelancer, LLC, partnership or corporation?Entity type decides which edition and which forms are required.
  3. Is your VAT or Umsatzsteuer status small-business exempt or regular? Some German products cover only exempt or simple cases and treat VAT-liable users separately.
  4. How many returns and how many states or businesses do you need to file?Per-state fees and limits on returns per license change the total price.
  5. Do you want a person to review or prepare the return, or only software?Expert tiers cost more and can be priced per entity or as a share of a refund.
  6. If you run a tax firm: how many clients and staff do you have, and do you keep DATEV?Client bands, included users and the DATEV interface decide which plan and which add-ons are needed.

Example request

What a strong tax software request looks like
We are a three-person design collective with two freelancers in Germany and one partner who files US taxes as a sole proprietor. We need tax software for self-employed people, one product per country. The German side must file the EÜR, Umsatzsteuer and Gewerbesteuer and submit electronically. The US side needs Schedule C, Schedule SE and one state return. We would like to import last year's data and, ideally, reach an expert if a question comes up. Everyone works on Windows or in the browser. We want to file within the next two months, and the budget is low three figures per year across both countries. Please tell us which forms are included in your price and what is extra.

Write your own request

The bottom line

Narrow the shortlist in three steps: decide whether you file for yourself or run a tax firm, pick the country, and confirm that your forms or your Kanzlei workflows are included. Filers should check entity type and whether they want a human expert, while firms should check the DATEV interface and how the portal is priced. A precise request on SaaSBid lets vendors quote the right edition and the real total.
